Evolving Tradition: Tokyo Hand-Painted Yuzen Artist Kumiko Machida
Just a few minutes from my home, there is a wonderful artist practicing Tokyo hand-painted Yuzen—Ms. Kumiko Machida.
Ms. Machida first encountered Kaga Yuzen when she was in junior high school, and from that moment, she began to envision a future where she could pursue Yuzen as her profession.
However, the kimono industry has been facing a gradual decline.
In response, she has been exploring new ways to make Yuzen more accessible—creating playful kimono designs and accessories, as well as developing “Digital Yuzen,” where hand-painted works are scanned and transformed into data that can be applied to various materials and products.
Furthermore, she has expanded her activities internationally through exhibitions and sales, opening new directions beyond tradition alone. Her approach—honoring tradition while embracing innovation—was truly inspiring to me.
She offers many beautiful pieces, and I personally purchased an eco-bag (scarf bag) that can also be used as a scarf or placemat.
Ms. Machida, thank you very much.
