First, I would like to introduce the following traditional pattern:
Seigaiha (Blue Ocean Waves)
The pattern on the tie worn by Sota (my cat model)
is called Seigaiha.
Characteristics of the Pattern
Seigaiha represents waves,
depicted as overlapping semicircles arranged in a scale-like pattern.
Origin
The name “Seigaiha” comes from a traditional Gagaku (Japanese court music) piece of the same name.
The pattern itself is believed to have originated in ancient Persia,
traveling along the Silk Road before being introduced to Japan during the Asuka period.
It began to be associated with water imagery after the Kamakura period
and became widely popular during the Edo period.
Meaning
Like waves that stretch endlessly into the distance,
this pattern symbolizes:
- Wishes for eternal happiness
- Prayers for peaceful and harmonious living
It is considered an auspicious design carrying positive meanings.
Although this is a pattern you may often see,
I will continue sharing the meanings and stories behind such designs
little by little through this blog.
Thank you, and I look forward to sharing more with you.
