Hello, how are you?
As I continue learning about traditional Japanese patterns,
I would love to share them with you as well.
This time, I would like to introduce the following pattern:
Asanoha (Hemp Leaf Pattern)

You may have seen this pattern before.
It is known as the Asanoha pattern.
Characteristics of the Pattern
The Asanoha pattern is a geometric design created using horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines.
It features a repeating arrangement of diamond and hexagonal shapes in a precise, continuous pattern.
Origin
Rather than being directly made from hemp leaves,
the name “Asanoha” comes from its resemblance to the shape of hemp leaves.
There are also variations of this pattern, such as:
- Kuzure Asanoha: a broken or distorted version of the pattern
- Nejire Asanoha: a twisted version of the pattern
- Asanoha Kanoko: where the outline is carved into circular shapes resembling a fawn pattern
Meaning
Hemp is a plant known for its fast and strong growth,
reaching up to 4–5 meters in just four months.
Because it grows straight and vigorously,
this pattern carries meanings such as:
- Health
- Growth
For this reason, it has traditionally been used in baby clothing and amulets,
with the wish for children to grow up strong and healthy, as well as for protection from evil.
Additionally, hemp has long been considered a sacred material in Japan,
used in purification rituals and closely associated with spiritual practices.
Because of this, the Asanoha pattern is also believed to have protective and purifying qualities.
Pattern Collage
With these meanings in mind,
this time I created a collage image inspired by children at play,
symbolizing growth and vitality.
Through this blog,
I hope to continue sharing these stories little by little with you.
Thank you, and I look forward to sharing more.
