How have you been?
As I continue learning about traditional Japanese patterns, I would like to share them with you little by little.
Today, I would like to introduce the following pattern:
Shippo Tsunagi (Interlocking Circles)
Many of you may have watched the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
If you looked closely at the stadium, did you notice something?
The field was surrounded by a pattern of interlocking circles.
This design is known as “Shippo Tsunagi.”
Features of the Pattern
Shippo Tsunagi is created by overlapping circles (or sometimes ovals) of the same size by one quarter, repeating continuously both vertically and horizontally.
By layering the circles, the intersections can appear like shining stars, while other overlapping areas resemble flower petals.
This pattern is also known as:
- Wachigai Tsunagi
- Kuruwatsunagi
Origin
Because the pattern continues infinitely in all directions, it has long been considered a symbol of good fortune.
It is said that during the Edo period, the term evolved as follows:
“Shihō (four directions)” → “Shippo” → “Seven Treasures (七宝)”
The word “Shippo” also refers to the Seven Treasures, which are considered precious materials.
These treasures vary slightly depending on the source, but commonly include:
- Gold
- Silver
- Crystal
- Lapis lazuli
- Agate
- Coral
- Pearl
They are also mentioned in Buddhist scriptures such as the Infinite Life Sutra and the Lotus Sutra, with slight variations in interpretation.
Meaning
This pattern carries auspicious meanings such as:
- Connection and relationships
- Harmony
- Peace and completeness
- Prosperity of descendants
Because of these meanings, it is often used for celebrations such as weddings or new beginnings.
Pattern Collage
With these meanings in mind, I created a collage inspired by this pattern.
Since “Shippo” also represents the Seven Treasures,
this piece is designed with the image of the Seven Lucky Gods.
I will continue sharing more about traditional patterns little by little through this blog.
Thank you for reading.
